I am starting to investigate John Lane/Lean in an attempt to prove him as a Loyalist.

LANE, JOHN
A farmer of Ballstown, New York. Lane owned 100 acres, twenty of which were improved. He joined the British Army under Burgoyne on August 17, 1777, and served in the Loyal Rangers until the Peace, settling at New Carlisle, Chaleur after the Peace. Lane estimated his loss at ₤236 New York.
From Biographical Sketches of Loyalists of the American Revolution by Gregory Palmer, Meckler Publishing, Westport, CT, 1984.

I believe John Lane may be the same person as John Lean listed with a woman and two children in the Brig St. Peter in the "Return of Loyalists and Discharged Soldiers embarked on Board the Province Vessels for Chaleur Bay, 9th June, 1784." Neither Lane nor Lean is listed in the Directory of Loyalists on the United Empire Loyalists’ Association of Canada website http://www.uelac.org/.

There was a John Lane appearing before the Losses Claims Commission in Quebec City on 5 May 1787, although his origin is given as Vermont, according to The Loyalists of Quebec 1774-1825; A Forgotten History, the official publication of Heritage Branch, Montreal, of United Empire Loyalists’ Association of Canada, published by Price Patterson Ltd., Montreal, 1989.

From Raymond Garrett http://www.rocher-perce.org/garrett/ I have John Lane and Ann Cunningham as the parents of three daughters: Ann (1775-1845), Mary and Rose. Ann is shown as married to Hector Morrison with a family of 5 children including Flora born about 1806. I have documentation from me back to Flora as my 3rd great grandmother.

I would like to exchange information with anyone else researching John Lane/Lean and his descendants.

The John Lane of Ballstown, Albany Co. is the John Lane from New Carlisle that petitioned in 1786. If memory serves me right, portions of Albany Co. were once considered part of Vermont.

John Lane is almost certainly a Loyalist. Now comes the fun part, providing evidence for each link between you and John Lane. I've done this successfully for someone else twice, but the third time is proving to be very difficult.  I'm having trouble providing evidentiary links between mid to late 19th century people, the 18th century and early 19th century links I have the proper evidence for. Normally, one would think that would be reversed. Go figure!

Do you think John Lane is also John Lean of the Brig St. Peter?

I will get back to you with what I have on my links and see what ideas you have.

Since no John "Lean" appears anywhere after the 1784 ship list, and since no John "Lane"  appears before 1786 when he is first seen on this muster, I think it probable that John "Lean" and John "Lane" are the same person.

John "Lane" appears on the 1786 muster with a wife and two female children, ages fifteen and eleven. John "Lean" appears on the 1784 ship list with a wife and two children.
