2007 Aug 16 - update: My name is Patricia 'Peg' Feirtag, nee GILLIS. I am 68+ and live in St Paul, Minnesota.

My GILLIS family moved to Chaleur Bay from the Miramichi, NB area @ 1830 -
WILLIAM GILLIS (b @ 1787, d 18 March 1860, Mansfield Twp, Pontiac Co, Quebec. William married MARY ANN WALSH (1785-5 Apr 1856), resided in Maria. Mary Ann Walsh died 5 Apr 1856 and is buried at Holy Angels parish in New Richmond. I have William & Mary Ann Gillis family. Believe when William left Cascapedia around 1856, he sold his property to daughter ELIZABETH and her husband JOHN HAMILTON.

William's brother DONALD GILLIS, (1788 - 22 Aug 1853), also buried at Holy Angels. Want PROBATE on him.

Wm & Mary Ann's son DANIEL GILLIS (28 Sep 1817 - 11 Sep 1900) married to ANN HARRISON (16 Jan 1824 - 21 Oct 1895) da of JAMES HARRISON (1776 - @ 1840) & AMELIA GIBSON ( d 1864), resided in Cascapedia for 15 years:
1840-1855 - Daniel Gillis & family lived in Cascapedia. Lot #17-18, #54517 Nor'west, north of Maria, 1st Range Cascapedia, Twnsp of Maria, re Archie Cormier, Tippy's father, who had Lot 19A north, S Lot 17, W Lot 18 -Charles Engelhart. Warren Gilker showed us the land grant to Coull who lived next to Daniel Gillis when we visited 1988. As a lumberman/farmer, there were three gullys in the area named after Dan Gillis. When Daniel put up his barn, there was a barn raising party. Daniel Gillis is mentioned by name in New Richmond non-Catholic church records as the place where, at the time of the barn raising party, a boy impregnated a girl - because their relatives are still residing in Cascapedia/New Richmond area, the church will not release the records. Daniel Gillis and Ann Harrison & family left Chaleur Bay and went to Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Arrived October 1855. I have most of Daniel & Ann's family.

We have quite a GILLIS, WALSH, HARRISON, HAMILTON, GILKER & other family history in the Cascapedia area of the Gaspe. Yet, myself & another Canadian descendant - have gone the distance, been transferred back and forth, and cannot understand why we have had absolutely NO LUCK trying to obtain PROBATE or any other info. on our ancestors from Quebec or Quebec Province. This is NOT THE CASE in all other provinces of Canada.
