Simon McTavish (Donald McTavish/Jane Garrett), born on 26 Mar 1864, pictured along with his bride, Helena Nerenhausen of Peshtigo, Marinette Co., Wisconsin. They were married on 16 Feb 1897 in Oconto, Oconto Co., Wisconsin.

Cathy McTavish, the donor of this wedding photo, adds: "Simon and his twin, Margaret were the youngest of 14 children born to Donald McTavish and Jane Garrett. His father was 64 years old when he was born and died just 10 years after Simon was born. It is my guess that his brothers were much more of an influence on him than his father or mother. Jane died at the age of 76 in 1897. Simon left the Gaspé about 1882, when he just came of age. My research would indicate he left home with a destination in mind. As there were many Gaspe immigrants in Oconto at this time, I have always wondered who he followed.

One interesting tidbit is that I have a birth certificate for Simon, that Simon himself obtained on a visit home in 1934, which lists his mother as Jane Garrett. On Simon’s death certificate his mother is listed as Jane Sutton. Simon’s son Frank was the informer. Frank never knew his Gaspe grandparents, but must have had quite a bit of interaction with the Sutton’s in Oconto."
